Map of Japan Kawaraban

DATE
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: 19thc

Early map of Japan woodblock print Kawaraban.

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “Fascinating! The title, Dainihon rokujūyonshū ekō, means ‘Pictorial thoughts on the 64 provinces of Great Japan’, and the language suggests a late Edo date. Ohya Shobō has a copy for sale for 76000 yen and dates it to the Kaei era (1848-54).”

According to scholar Angelika Koch, “How lovely! It seems that the different provinces in this map are inscribed with rebuses based on wordplays. In the Northwest, for example, picture of hand (te) + picture of ring (wa) = Dewa Province.”
