Map of Japan with Disputed Territories

Decade: 1800s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: c1800

Japanese hand-painted manuscript map of Japan with disputed territories, including the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as the tip of (Korea) and the disputed island of Tsushima located between Japan and Korea. The Island of Tsushima is colored in red like the main islands of Japan and had already been claimed by Japan. Ezo (Hokkaido) is not included as the map is too early and this area was not developed yet. The Tsushima Island dispute goes back to 1945, when US SCAP Occupation forces listed the island as part of Japan. In the 1950s Korea tried to claim it and claims have been made in recent years as well.
