Map of Okinawa and China

DATE
Decade: 1780s
Century: 18th (1701-1800)

Japanese manuscript map of the Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa), Taiwan, the southern portion of Japan (Kyushu), parts of China, and many islands in the region, including the disputed Senkaku Islands (Diaoyu in Chinese), with trade and shipping routes marked for a Satsuma Daimyo (Feudal Lord), titled Tsuran Zusetsu by the great Japanese cartographer Hayashi Shihei. Since Japan was isolated at that time, under the Kaikin system, this rare manuscript would have been restricted information.
