A “Salute to Martin Luther King, Jr.” was held at the Westchester County Center to benefit the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), featuring Sammy Davis and the president’s brother-in-law Peter Lawford. $12,000 was raised for the cause.
Here Dr. King appears backstage with retired New York Giants star Monte Irvin and SCLC vice president Ralph Abernathy. At far right is New York Giants owner Horace Stoneham, Irvin’s former employer. This photograph, apparently unpublished, came from Irvin’s personal collection. On the back is a caption in Irvin’s distinctive hand, as well as a typed label: “This is me with Rev. Martin Luther King . . .”
