Maru Maru Chimbun Newspaper

Issue of the satirical newspaper ‘Maru Maru Chimbun’ with cartoon of President Grant on his visit to Japan, “The Numazu, like Honen, making excursions in the country; this time to show our foreign guests around.” The Namazu (catfish) represents the government and “Honen” is a reference to a Buddhist monk who traveled throughout Japan. This is criticizing the fact that the government has time and money to entertain foreign guests but not do the business at hand. Another print shows businessmen selling weapons and profiting from war.
