A newspaper, complete and authentic issue of the New York World Telegram for June 12, 1963. Front page headline “NAACP Aide Slain By Jackson Sniper,” then column headline, “Negro Is Shot Outside Home After Meeting.” The two column report continues with the details of the killing of Medgar Evers, includes a photo. Other Civil Rights news includes George Wallace steps aside at University of Alabama, two Negroes starting classes at University of Alabama, pickets at Harlem Hospital construction site. Evers was assassinated by Byron De La Beckwith, a member of the White Citizens’ Council. As a veteran, Evers was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. His murder and the resulting trials inspired civil rights protests, as well as numerous works of art, music, and film.
