Melikian Letter

DATE
Year: 1953
Decade: 1950s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)
Notes: May 30, 1953

A letter written from Turkey to my father (Greg Melikian) in New York on May 30th, 1953 when his parents returned to Turkey for the first time since they escaped the massacre of their families in the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The letter is written by a friend of my grandparents traveling with them, since they were too emotional to write it themselves.

The letter describes a meeting with cousin who they hadn’t seen since 1915. This cousin had been saved from being killed after she had been kidnapped by the Turks to become a bride and convert to Islam.
