Mexican Blood Purity Manuscript
A Pureza de Sangre (Blood Purity manuscript) belonging to a family of a conqueror of Mexico that came with Cortés.
Presented to the family Esquivel y Vargas, descendants of Conqueror of México Pedro de Cuellar, who arrived with Cortés, and of Alonso Hernández de Esquivel, Comendador de la Orden de Santiago, who fought together with the King Ferdinand II of Spain in the reconquest of Spain, particularly the City of Sevilla, where the family resided.
The great grandson of the Comendador, Diego de Esquivel migrated to México, where he married the only daughter of Pedro de Cuellar, conquistador, who fought in the Conquest in Mexico City, Oaxaca and accompanied Cortés in his expedition to Central América.
The document was requested by their heirs in 1731, and it comprises the family history since the Conquest by means of various Mercedes, Cédulas Reales, disputes and titles which are copied here, and which were granted to the family by various Kings.
Of interest is the life of Pedro de Cuellar, since there are not many references to him in the literature; and in the request to restitute Encomiendas of the towns of Copilco, Caqualco, Real Pueblo de Ataco, Poquiapas, Equinolapa y Tonala which were lost by the death of Pedro de Cuellar. Five old Conquistadores testify in favor of Diego Esquivel: Francisco de Tarifa, Francisco Franco, Juan de Vera, Joan Perez de Herrera and Joan de Villagomez in the year 1572, which gives also insight on their lives.
In a document dated in 1610, many witnesses are grandsons of conquerors, which shows that they had kept in contact with each other, probably as members of a Cofradia.
At the end the family kept records of birthsin the family until 1771.
