Nazi-Zionist Cooperation Medal: “A Nazi Travels to Palestine”
Medal commemorating the unexpected unity between the early Nazi Party and the German Zionist Federation.
In the early days of Nazi rule, the Zionist Movement shared a common goal with the Third Reich government – encouraging immigration of German Jews to Palestine. In the spring of 1933, Kurt Tuchler, German-Jewish judge and high-ranking member of the German Zionist Federation, contacted Leopold von Mildenstein, a senior Nazi officer who was head of the Jewish department of the SD (the security service of the SS and the Nazi party), and asked him to publish an article in the Nazi press about the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine.
In 1933, the two men traveled to Palestine for one month, and after their return to Germany, von Mildenstein published a series of 12 illustrated articles titled “A Nazi Travels to Palestine” in the Nazi newspaper “Der Angriff” (“The Attack”) — the mouthpiece of Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. To commemorate the article series, Goebbels commissioned this medal.
