Poem by Don Jose Joaquin Fernandez De Lizardi

DATE
Year: 1817
Decade: 1810s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

A signed, but undated poem, dated 1817 in pencil by Don Jose Joaquin Fernandez de Lizardi, named “El Pensador Mexicano.” He was very important during the Mexican Independence, writing hundreds of pamphlets, a few novels and some short stories. Am I a full wiseman, with knowladge and imagination?
that I am familiar with Talia
and in the top of the Pindo I am sitted?
It must be so, I have ignored it
and although for a fool I considered me,
from Nuñes, the sweetness and melody,
from this “craso” error has removed me.
So I thought, friend, and boastful,
I noticed your verses, and in an instant,
down came señor Apolo loudly,
and looking at me with angry faced,
he said: Nuñez is very loving,
his love decives him, you are ignorant
He said and flew-your servant
without shame at end- Joaquin
will not make boast of his knowladge-Lizarde
Never was dissapointment late
to arrive to the prudent
belive then, that it is not wise, not your servanyJoaquin Lizarde.
