Portrait of Former Samurai
Japanese ambrotype portrait of a former Samurai with chonmage (Top-not). Since the passing of the Haitorei Edict, at this time Samurai were prohibited from carrying swords. In a form of quiet protest they would sometimes hold an umbrella in the place of a sword.
Scholar Peter Kornicki commented that the script says that, “Somebody called Masajirō who was 21 in 1865 (when the photo was taken?); written in 1885.”
