NOTES: One of the most unusual Japanese ambrotypes I have owned. Outstanding and original. A fine early Japanese ambrotype.

Japanese ambrotype portrait of a young scholar with a scroll and pipe. The young scholar’s name was Sogou (or Soga), and the photographer signed his name in English on the case top: “F. Sogo,” under the Japanese kanji for photograph.
