Portuguese Scientific Monograph

First edition of a rare Portuguese scientific monograph on comets by the erudite mathematician, Jesuit astronomer and professor at the prestigious University of Coimbra, António Pimenta (1620-1700). The work describes the great comet of 1664 observed in Europe advancing with theories.

Father Pimenta´s monograph reveals that he was well versed with controversies regarding scholars theories on comets. In his work he often quotes Johannes Kepler, Tycho Brahe, Michael Maestlin, Cristoforo Borri, Cornelius Gemma, Aristotle, Alberto Pighio, Adam Tanner, among others.
