Preliminary Fan Paintings

Japanese hand painted artist’s manuscript set of highly detailed preliminary fan paintings.

The scenes are of places in and around Kyoto; one can recognize Arashiyama, Kitano tenmangu, Tofukuji Temple, and the temple with the red gate which is Ninnaji. One painting even includes an early railroad bridge, showing how Western architecture and technology were making their way into Japan.
