Print Block of Chiba Coastline and Railway System

DATE
Year: 1894
Decade: 1890s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Meiji 27

Unique Japanese woodblock print ‘Hangi’ (printing block) for a map of the coast of Chiba showing a railway system from the shoreline inland. It comes with the original documents proposing this new railway line, which has two hand drawn maps of the proposal and a 34 page hand written document with signatures and seals of town and area officials.

According to scholar Sugihiko Uchida, “Apparently the appeal for new prefectural roads (not railroads) submitted by several village mayors to the prefectural governors.”
