Print of Washington and His Slaves

DATE
Decade: 1850s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

A Color Print of “Washington as a Farmer, Etchotone From Painting by Junius Brutus Stearn.” It depicts George Washington talking with an overseer on his farm in Mount Vernon, where several slaves are harvesting hay. A small boy and girl, possibly the overseer’s children, sit in the grass, the boy twining flowers in the girl’s hair. The original oil for this print, Washington as a Farmer at Mount Vernon (1851), is in the collection of The Mount Vernon’s Ladies Association.
