Proof of Ownership of Cattle for Slaughter

Year: 1889
Decade: 1880s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Dated June 1, 1889

A legal document filed in the Village of Pima, Graham County, Arizona Territory. It contains the dates and descriptions of cattle that were killed for slaughter during the month of May, 1889 and ownership of the cattle: W. Crocket, G. Webb, Heber Cluff, Samuel Dall, John W. Allred, J. W. Johnson, R.W. Allred, S. C. Matthews, A.N. Bryce, and Engstrom. These people were very early pioneers of Graham County.

It is signed by the butcher, Solomon Hancock and then sworn and subscribed by H. Weech, Justice of the Peace, dated June 14, 1889.

Cattle rustling had become so prevalent that it was necessary for a butcher to prove the cattle they slaughtered was done so legally by filing a monthly sworn statement describing the cattle and ownership.
