Records of the Heroes of the Three Kingdoms, Part II

DATE
Decade: 1840s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Japanese woodblock print book: Samurai, vol.1 by the Kuniyoshi School, with prints of Samurai wearing armor, fighting, etc.

The title is Eiketsu zoku sangokushi den, something like “Records of the Heroes of the Three Kingdoms, Part II”. The title is a reference to the Chinese classic „ “Records of the Three Kingdoms“ (in Japansese read Sangokushi-den), a very popular piece which has inspired lots of writings (including, apparently, this one) in many Asian countries. There are even video games with the title.

This book, however, is not about China, but about Japan during the Warring States Period. One of the more famous characters (“Heroes“) mentioned in the text is Kato Kiyomasa , so it is about the last stage of the Warring States period in the late 16th century. Kiyomasa Kato(加藤清正) one of the feudal lords, a hero in Sengoku era, is depicted.
