Report of Shipwrecked British Sailors

DATE
Year: 1822
Decade: 1820s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Bunsei 5

A manuscript from Tsuyama Han (Okayama Prefecture) concerning the problem of a British whaling vessel that shipwrecked off the coast. The surviving sailors were held captive by the local feudal lord. This manuscript is an early report of the problems the Shogun had with shipwrecks and survivors. Being a closed country, the survivors had to be held as prisoners. This is one of the issues that Perry came to Japan to clear up several decades later.
