Republican Poster aimed at African Americans

“You are a Sleeping Giant! Wake Up and Vote Republican!” – a poster from November 5th, 1968 in Philadelphia. Published by the Republican City Committee. This supplement for The Crusader, presumably a black newspaper, was paid for by the “Republican City Committee.” The 1968 presidential campaign was one of the ugliest in modern history. Marred by the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in April and Robert F. Kennedy in June, Americans were deeply divided about the war in Viet Nam and the growing Civil Rights movement. This brochure sought to bring black voters back to the Republican party by attacking Southern “Dixiecrats,” and blaming higher taxes on deficit spending – code words for programs promised by the Democrats.
