Russian Copy of “Jewels of the Ocean”
A Turkish folio manuscript on Russian paper – a unique example of a Ottoman literary classic (Jewels of the Ocean by Ahmed Bicon) copied in St. Petersburg on October 29th, 1814. The copyist could have either been a Ottoman diplomat or a Crimea or Volga Tatar. A waaf note on the colophon shows that by 1840 it was in Tatar hands in the small town of Chutay in modern day Tatarstan.
An eclectic assemblage of objects coving a wide range of human history.
