Samurai Karuta Playing Card Set

DATE
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

Japanese hand painted Samurai Daimyo Karuta Playing Card Set. Each card has hand painted pictures of Samurai crests (mon) and Samurai standards carried into battle (uma jirushi).

According to scholar Sugihiko Uchida, “This is also for practical use. It was very important for samurais to have good knowledge of the family crests and banners of daimyos. These cards depict the crests and banners of various DAIMYOs (feudal lords)on the obverse. Each daimyos name, title and stipend are written on the reverse of each card.”
