Satsuma Rebellion Manuscript

DATE
Year: 1877
Decade: 1870s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Meiji 10

Manuscript on the Satsuma Rebellion (Last Samurai).

According to scholar Jim Lockhart, “The title is Sappi Denshin-roku. This particular book looks like it covers the same content as (see Link 1) starting from folio 20/57 (see Link 2), but the copy in the National Diet Library (NDL) is printed and attributed to someone whose name I guess is Tokoi Seiichiro. The illustrations, though not in color, are the same, but there is an additional map. The NDL copy is dated 29 March 1877.”

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “This work was actually printed at the expense of the author, Tsunei Seiichirō, in 1877. This copy appears to consist only of volume 2, and my suspicion is that this is a private manuscript copy of the printed work. The printed edition was printed with movable type but the illustrations were printed with wood blocks. The cover has the words Wada-sei (surname Wade) written on and this may indicate the name of the copyist or owner. I cannot make out the word written in roman characters – it looks like Zūbai or Jūbai but makes no sense to me.”
