Scroll with 16 Maps of Japan

DATE
Year: 1859
Decade: 1850s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)
Notes: Ansei 6

Japanese hand-painted manuscript cartography scroll with 16 Maps of Japan, signed Sato.

Scholar Brian Bergstrom noted that, “The wooden box says 文化三丙寅歳.
The first part is 文化三 — 3rd year of the Bunka Era, aka 1806. 1806 is a year in one of the sub-cycles of Tiger years in the Zodiac calendar — 丙寅歳 is telling you that. This is a table with this particular sub-cycle of the Tiger years (the Hinoe-tora-doshi).”
