Shinritsu Kōryō

DATE
Year: 1871
Decade: 1870s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

According to Peter Francis Kornicki FBA, a English Japanologist and Emeritus Professor of Japanese at Cambridge University and Deputy Warden of Robinson College, Cambridge, “The title is Shinritsu Kōryō: this was the first legal code promulgated by the new Meiji government at the end of 1870, with a revised edition appearing in 1873. The colophon at the end is dated 1871 by Takahashi Shigetake of Murayama in Uzen (now Yamagata Prefecture in Northern Honshu). So this is a copy of the original edition. Probably copies were hard to come by in Uzen and so Takahashi had to resort to making a copy for himself.”
