Shōgaku Gagaku Kyōjuhō

DATE
Decade: 1870s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

The title is ‘Shōgaku Gagaku Kyōjuhō’ (the method of teaching art in primary schools), a Japanese manuscript Hanshita-e prototype book on drawing.

According to scholar Jim Lockhart, “What beautiful writing! Not sure that this is about architecture, but it is about drawing objects. It is supposed to be for elementary school pupils. There seems to be mention of perspective and shadowing.”

According to scholar Peter Kornicki, “As Jim Lockhart rightly says, this is not about architecture but about drawing. The title is Shōgaku Gagaku Kyōjuhō (The method of teaching art in primary schools). The word hanshita means a final version of the text ready to be used for woodblock printing, and hanshita-e are the illustrations.

On the first page Honda Kinkichirō is listed as the author and translator, implying that this was translated from some imported textbook. Honda (1851-1921) learnt English at Keiō Gijuku in 1871 and my guess is that this dates from the 1870s when woodblock printing was still the norm. This seems to be a follow-up album (no. 2 of 2 or 3 of 3).”
