Silver Chalice with Inscriptions

Silver Chalice with faded gold plating, a large base and two inscriptions. The style is pure Armenian.

The top inscription reads,”This chalice is dedicated by Semerchi oghlu to the memory of the mahdesi (from the Arabic for holy-used by Armenians to indicate a person had made the pilgrimage to Jerusalem) Stephan and his sons Georg and Mariam”. The lower inscription reads,”To the bride Karine, who passed into the next life in Nikisar (city in Minor Armenia, province of Sebastia) to the Holy Church of Saint Simeon in the Armenian era January 1816″.
