Decade: 1900s
Century: 20th (1901-2000)

Japanese woodblock print propaganda triptych set, both for the Sino-Japanese War. The first triptych, by Toshikata, is titled Teikoku Akagi-Kancho Sakamoto Shosa Funsen with rare English title above: Terrible War of General (sic) Sakamoto. Leader of Imperial Warship Akagi. An account by a Japanese officer on the Akagi is as follows: “On September 17, at about 1 p.m., the first Japanese squadron of eleven warships encountered a Chinese squadron of 14 warships…the Akagi found herself soon in the thickest of the fight with the armored cruiser King-Yuen.” The account goes on to tell of the bravery of Commander Sakamoto as he directed the firing of the guns aboard the Akagi. The other triptyc depicts the Japanese navy fighting the Chinese navy off the coast of Korea.
