Social Code of New Spain

DATE
Year: 1622
Decade: 1620s
Century: 17th (1601-1700)

The first edition first publication of the comprehensive social code of New Spain decreed by the Third Mexican Concilium in 1585. Largely concerned with missionary activities and the rights of the Indians. Sanctum provinciale concilium Mexici. Mexico: Juan Ruiz, 1622.

According to Adrian Masters, “This is the Third Council of Mexico – perhaps not best understood as a social code, but rather, as the normative guidelines of all churchmen and friars in the viceroyalty (to be read in conjunction with royal decrees, canon law, and other contemporary normative sources).”
