Newcastle Swimming Baths “Whites Only” sign. Also contains lines: “Mon. Sat 8 AM 1 PM, Sun. Closed. No Dogs.” Newcastle is the third-largest city in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is an industrial city with a huge native work force. This sign once stood, mounted to a wooden frame on Newcastle’s beach.Segregation or “apartheid” is no longer the law of the land in South Africa. However, a sort of segregation still exists brought about by the wide economic gulf that exists between blacks and whites in South Africa.
