NOTES: Request a Flag Flown Over the Capitol. On average, more than 100,000 American flags fly over the U.S. Capitol a year. Why so many? The Capitol Flag Program, which began in 1937, allows a member of Congress to request a flag be flown over the Capitol on behalf of a constituent. The flag is then given to the constituent. The Architect of the Capitol fulfills more than 100,000 flag requests from Members of the House and Senate each year. With advance notice, a flag can be flown on a specific date to commemorate a birthday, retirement, anniversary, or other special occasion. Each flag comes with a certificate of authenticity that can be personalized to reflect the occasion. Flags are available in nylon and cotton, and come in three sizes (3’x 5’ - 4’x 6’ - 5’x 8’). For flag care and display guidelines, see the United States Flag Code.

The Original Trump American Flag

Year: 2017
Decade: 2000s
Century: 21st (2001-2100)
Notes: January 20, 2017

The 2017 President Donald Trump Inauguration American Flag Flown at Request of Senator Bob Corker. Love him or loathe him, all Americans would agree that the inauguration of President Donald Trump represented a sea change in our nation’s history. This flag was flying over the Capitol at noon on January 20, 2017 as Donald Trump took the Oath of Office on its steps.

The flag was flown at the request of Republican Senator from Tennessee Bob Corker, as stated in the included certificate of authenticity from the “Architect of the Capitol,” the federal agency responsible for the building, and upon a label affixed to the original flag packaging. Corker and Trump have been engaged in a fierce public feud in early October of this year, adding further intrigue to this historic item. COA from the Architect of the Capitol.
