The Twelve Animals of the Tibetan Zodiac
According to the English description, when Buddha was dying, he called all the animals to come and see him and they came starting with the Rat who was nearest to him, followed by the other animals.
These cards were probably used for dispelling evil spirits from a particular person’s Zodiac sign or sometimes might be used for casting an evil spell on someone.
Scholar Andrew Singer noted, “Interesting that this zodiac is specifically tied to Buddhism and Tibet and yet parallels the non-Buddhist animal zodiac.”
