A handwritten petition to the mayor and councilmen of Tombstone, from Alex Pauline applying for “an appointment on the Police Force of this City.”The petition, written and signed by Pauline, includes the signatures of prominent Tombstone individuals and businesses as endorsements of Pauline’s application. Included among the endorsements are G. (Gus) Bilicke, owner of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and Wells Spicer (1831-1885), politician, prospector, lawyer and judge, who served as the judge in the inquest hearing of the Earps and Doc Holiday after the O.K. Corral shootout on October 26, 1881. Alex Pauline was listed in the Tombstone directory of 1883 and 1884 as a miner. Apparently, those who endorsed Pauline did not have enough influence to aid his cause. On the reverse of the petition it is noted that the document was filed on May 30, 1881 and tabled on June 6, 1881.
