Tombstone, Arizona: Rare Social Club Dance Card

DATE
Year: 1880

A dance card, for the Thanksgiving Party of the Tombstone Social Club, held on November 25, circa 1880, at Tombstone palatial Grand Hotel. The card was meant to be folded down the middle into a four-page bifolium. The back page of the card lists members of the various committees involved in organizing the party, while the interior panels included the list of twenty-two dances, which ranged from quadrilles to waltzes to polkas. Men who wanted to dance with a women holding a dance card would place their name or initials beside a particular dance. Tradition forbade women from asking men to dance. The Tombstone Social Club, as its name suggests, organized dances, benefits, and shows. This is a scare item that provides a glimpse of social life in early Tombstone.
