Japanese Kamishibai Propaganda Poster Card set, titled: “Treaty of Portsmouth and the Hibiya Incendiary Incident,” with artwork by Goda Makoto. Tells the story of the Marquis Komura Jutaro who negotiated the ending of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) with the signing of the Treaty of Portsmouth, brokered by President Teddy Roosevelt. The treaty was very unpopular in Japan and sparked protests and riots known as the Hibiya Incendiary Incident. The Japanese public felt humiliated by the terms of the treaty which called for the return of the Liaodong Peninsula and the northern part of Sakhalin. There were also overtones of racism felt by the Japanese due to the fact that they had defeated a non-Asian power but were now being persuaded by another non-Asian power to accept all the terms of the treaty, including the absence of war reparations from Russia. The Japanese blamed America for this humiliation and Roosevelt himself saw Japan as a growing threat to the stability of East Asia, all of this several decades before Pearl Harbor.
