Yasukuni Shrine was established in 1879 to commemorate the soldiers who fought and died in the Boshin Civil War of 1868, the Taiwan Expedition of 1874, and the Satsuma Rebellion of 1877. Today this controversial shrine commemorates the war dead of all wars Japan has fought in: Boshin Civil War (1868); Taiwan Expedition (1874); Satsuma Rebellion (1877); Imo Incident in Korea (1882); First Sino-Japanese War (1894-95); Boxer Rebellion (1900); Russo-Japanese War (1904-05); WW1 and the Siberian Expedition (1914-18); Battle of Qingshanli in Korea (1920); Jinan Incident in China (1928); Mukden Incident and the Occupation of Manchuria (1932-37); Nomonhan Incident against Soviet forces (1939); Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-41); and WWII Pacific War (1941-45).
