COMPONENTS: Each carved wood with black patina and remains of white lime in the incised areas. Upper edges with raised and incised abstract designs, fish and sea birds. A coiled snake incised on the bottom of the larger.
CONDITION: In good condition; the smaller with a dent on the bottom and damage inside.

Two Massim Feast Bowls from the eastern tip of the New Guinea mainland and the adjacent off shore islands dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

The province of the Massim has more than 600 islands with 276,000 inhabitants speaking about 48 languages, most of which belong to the Eastern Malayo-Polynesian branch of the Austronesian language family.
