Utagawa Kuniaki Elephant Print

Century: 19th (1801-1900)

According to Peter Francis Kornicki FBA, a English Japanologist and Emeritus Professor of Japanese at Cambridge University and Deputy Warden of Robinson College, Cambridge, “This print is by Utagawa Kuniaki. There is a reference to Yokohama in the print, which suggests that this elephant was imported after 1855.”

Artist Information: "Print artist and painter. Pupil of Utagawa Kunisada (q.v.); thought by some to be the same person as Hachisuka Kuniaki (q.v.). His father, Tatsunosuke, a minor samurai in the fourteenth division of castle guards. Produced actor and genre prints and paintings of beauties during the late Edo period.
