Volume on Christian Problems

Year: 1865
Decade: 1860s
Century: 19th (1801-1900)

1865 Japanese print volume on Christian problems, specifically the French Catholic influence in Nagasaki. In Nagasaki. the Oura Church was built by the Paris Missions Society (Missions Etrangeries de Paris). A French missionary, Petitean, was sent there and discovered that Christians had been secretly practicing there for nearly 250 years. This news came as an embarrassment to the Tokugawa Bakufu government and this volume was published as a result to scare the Japanese into believing that Christianity was evil and would hurt Buddhism inJapan. There is much criticism about the lack of morals of the Christians and the parties they had in Urakami, Nagasaki to lure innocent Japanese into their religion. The treatise is very negative toward all aspects of Christianity and was a last effort by the Tokugawa government to stop the religion in Japan. In 1873, the ban on Christianity would finally be lifted by the newly formedMeiji government.
