WWII Yosegaki Flag and Buddhist Prayer Belt

WWII Japanese signed Yosegaki Battle Flag and Buddhist Prayer Senninbari (Thousand Stitch Belt), the property of a soldier named Hayakawa Hajime.

There is bold kanji on the flag, while on the Senninbari at the center is written 南無妙法蓮華経, the declaration of the belief of Nichiren-sect, meaning the faith in Lotus Sutra (法華経) . It is surrounded by the names of deities of Buddhism with南無(num), an expression of faith. Senninbari stitches are visible through parts of the outer fabric.

Scholar Brian Bergstrom commented, “I believe that’s the Lotus Sutra on the belt, and many many names all over the flag. The largest writing down the center is 南無妙法蓮華, the first part of the Lotus Sutra, identified especially with Nichiren”

Scholar Sugihiko Uchida commented, “At the center is written 南無妙法蓮華経, the declaration of the belief of Nichiren-sect, meaning the faith in Lotus Sutra (法華経) . It is surrounded by the names of deities of Buddhism with南無(num), an expression of faith.”
